Claudie Beaulieu, Principal Investigator

I am an associate professor in the Ocean Sciences Department at UC Santa Cruz. I am interested in quantifying ocean & climate variability and change through advanced statistical and machine learning tools. Before moving to Santa Cruz, I spent five years in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences at the University of Southampton in the UK. Before that, I did a postdoc with Jorge Sarmiento at Princeton University and worked with Taha Ouarda at INRS-ETE and Ousmane Seidou at University of Ottawa during my PhD.

Current members:

Dongran Zhai

Dongran is a PhD student in Ocean Sciences at UCSC. She joined the group after receiving a MS in Ocean Sciences at UCSC. She is working on trends in satellite ocean color. She was awarded a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council to conduct her research.

John Torres

John is a PhD student in Ocean Sciences at UCSC. He joined the group after receiving a MS in Applied Maths and a MS in Physics at CSU. John is working on detection and attribution of changes in the pace of surface temperature.

Gracie Pearsall

Gracie is a graduate student in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department primarily advised by Adina Paytan. Her research is focused on the carbon budget of coastal wetlands, and she aims to discern the drivers of wetland methane emissions, identify ‘hot spots’ and ‘hot moments’ of methane flux, and develop a predictive model for wetland methane emission using machine-learning.

Courtney Stratton

Courtney is a Master’s student in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department comparing statistical learning approaches for forecasting marine heatwaves.
